Preparing for Winter Driving
The alternator plays a very vital part in the electronic operations of your vehicle, including starting. As the vehicle runs it creates the necessary electricity needed by power windows and seats, the radio, lighting and other accessories to work. However, one of the most important things the generator does is keep the battery charged. A fully charged battery is necessary to get the car started, so it is important that if you experience any of these additional signs of alternator trouble that you get them taken care of right away!
As mentioned a bad alternator will cause a dead battery because once the alternator is no longer able to produce the electricity to keep it charge electronic devices will drain the battery of its power. However, batteries can die from other things as well, such as leaving your lights on or playing the radio with the car off, or just because it is old!
More than likely the first symptom of trouble for alternator problems will be the illumination of the dashboard indicator light. These lights usually read GEN or ALT.
The alternator is what provides the power to your headlights as you're driving, so dim lighting or flickering lighting could be an indication of a failing alternator. To avoid losing headlight power be sure to head to the auto repair mechanic right away.
You may lose power to other electronic devices, such as power windows and seats, automatic door locks, air conditioning and others, if your alternator goes bad. While there are other things that can cause these issues to occur, such as a blown fuse, it is worth looking into to ensure your trouble is not alternator related.
Trouble Starting & Stalling
The alternator provides the electricity to the spark plugs necessary to ignite the gasoline in your engine. A failing alternator may not be able to produce the necessary spark to start or keep the engine running, causing it to stall!
