What is Leaking from my Car?
Your car or truck uses a number of different fluids in order to operate its various systems. From time to time these fluids need to be replaced so that they can continue to do their jobs with ease. Unfortunately, as parts wear down they may begin to leak on their own. This guide will help you identify what may be leaking from your car. If you ever notice a drip, drip, drip don't hesitate to get in touch with your mechanic right away.
Red fluid leak
If you find a red fluid leaking from your car it will help to take note to determine exactly what it is, as two different systems use a similar looking and smelling fluid.
- Front of car - If the red fluid is dripping from the forward part of the vehicle is is most likely a transmission fluid leak. You may also experience grinding gears or delayed shifting if this is the trouble.
- Rear of car - A red fluid leaking from the rear half of the car may be caused by a differential leak. Get to the repair shop ASAP for proper diagnosis.
Brownish/clear fluid leak
One of the scariest fluid issues for any vehicle is a brake fluid leak. Brake fluid is generally a brownish, clear liquid that will leak from the brake master cylinder or the individual wheel cylinders. A soft brake pedal will generally accompany this leak.
Bright green fluid leak
The cooling system uses a liquid called coolant, also known as antifreeze, that is bright green and very sweet smelling. A cooling system leak will result in your vehicle's engine overheating, which can cause massive engine problems.
Black fluid leak
A black or thick brownish liquid dripping under the engine is more than likely a motor oil leak. It is important to have a technician check out the leak, as sometimes they need immediate repairs while others just need to be closely monitored.
