Six Signs of Transmission Trouble
If your car doesn't feel right while driving, you may be experiencing transmission trouble. An especially common problem among older vehicles, transmission failure should always be diagnosed by a qualified auto mechanic. Here are six signs your transmission may be having trouble:
1. Hesitating when shifting gears
If your car doesn't respond right away when you put it in gear, or if it hesitates when shifting from one gear to the next, there's probably transmission trouble afoot. Likewise, if the car's engine revs to higher RPM than usual before changing gears during acceleration, or jerks when the shift finally occurs, it's time to see a transmission repair shop.
2. Gear slippage
If your transmission 'slips' out of gear while you're driving, or seems to shift at abnormal times, you likely have a failing transmission. Not only can this can be an unnerving sensation because you've lost the ability to accelerate if necessary, but your vehicle is unsafe to drive. Have your transmission looked at immediately if you notice this symptom.
3. Whining, Grinding, Shaking and Noise
If you hear a grinding noise or feel a shake when the car shifts gears (particularly in manual transmissions), things are not functioning as they should. Also, if the car seems particularly noisy when in neutral, it can be a symptom of transmission trouble.
4. Leaking transmission fluid
It goes without saying that your car should not be leaking transmission fluid. You can identify it on your driveway by its reddish tint, and at the very least, a transmission leak should be fixed. But a leak can also be a sign of more trouble, so have a professional take a look.
5. Darkened, 'burnt' transmission fluid
The transmission fluid in a 'healthy' transmission will be a clear red and sweet-smelling. If the fluid appears dark, opaque and has a burned odor, things probably aren't working right. It's time to check with your mechanic.
6. Burnt smell
Increased friction on failing gears can cause a hot, 'burnt' smell, most commonly noticed when you get out of the car. If you identify a burnt odor like this, have it checked out as soon as possible.
