Preparing for Winter Driving
A low speed run in with a curb. Running over a pothole. A fender bender. These are all things that can throw a vehicle out of alignment, making it difficult to control your vehicle and allow for numerous other problems to occur. A bad bump can be rough on a car and if the vehicle's wheels do become misaligned from one another there is a good chance you will see tires wearing out faster and a drop in your fuel efficiency. If you experience any of these signs of alignment problems be sure to make an appointment with your local auto repair shop. It is important to have these issues fixed, no matter how minor, in order to maintain the health of the car and avoid any safety concerns because of poor handling capabilities.
It is pretty easy to tell if your vehicle has a really bad alignments because it will pull pretty hard to one side or the other. If you have to hold the steering sturdy to keep your car moving straight you'll want to grip it and head straight to the auto shop. Sometimes though the alignment may not be that bad and the pulling will be relatively soft and you may only notice it when you have a light grip on the steering wheel.
Crooked Steering Wheel
More than likely one of the first things that you'll notice if you have a bad alignment is that when you're driving straight your steering wheel is at an awkward angle. If the logo isn't straight up and down when the car is moving straight forward then something isn't right and you'll want to bring it to the attention of a mechanic.
An alignment probably basically means at least two tires are pulling against each other, trying to go in separate direction. As the vehicle tries to go this way and that it will cause a vibration that will be easily felt in the steering wheel as it shakes back and forth but if the alignment is bad enough the whole car will shake.
Odd Tire Wear
If you're suspicious of alignment or steering issues check the tread on your tires. If you can tell that two tires on the same axle are wearing in different ways than you can be relatively certain there's an alignment problem at hand.
Don't put up with control issues. Not only is this not safe but it can lead to numerous other vehicle problems.
