Bad Driving Habits that Can Destroy Your Transmission

Bad Driving Habits that Can Destroy Your TransmissionYour car's transmission is a highly complex mechanism that requires proper maintenance. Because seemingly minor transmission issues can drastically worsen within a matter of just a few miles, it's important to get to the shop at the first sign of trouble. During your daily driving routine, you'll want to go as gentle on your transmission as reasonably possible. Here's a look at six bad habits that can ruin your transmission.

Stomp on Your Brakes

Sometimes, you have to slam on the brakes. But it's best to avoid this whenever possible so that transmission mounts don't become susceptible to damage.

Don't Use Parking Brake

If you don't use your parking brake, your transmission can become very stressed as it works to hold your vehicle in place. This is particularly true if you're parked on a hill.

Pound the Accelerator

When you stomp on the gas pedal, it can hurt various driveline parts including your transmission. If your transmission isn't given an opportunity to cool down after creating excessive torque, then it could overheat.

Delay Transmission Maintenance

When basic maintenance is put off, a variety of transmission issues could emerge, such as much greater friction between moving parts. Such friction can cause parts to wear down to the point that major repairs are necessary.

Never Check Transmission Fluid

You'll want to periodically check your transmission fluid to ensure that it's at a healthy level and isn't burnt. And it's good practice to occasionally check for evidence of automotive fluid leaks. Transmission fluid can often be told apart from other fluids by its reddish color.

Don't Fully Stop Before Shifting from Drive to Reverse

By shifting between reverse and a forward gear without completely stopping, your transmission will be more likely to develop problems.

If you need transmission repair, be sure to bring your vehicle to a reputable mechanic.
