Pee-Yew! The Smells of Car Repair
Sure, your vehicle has tons of sensors and microprocessors that can detect the most minute problems within your vehicle, but sometimes you don't need a computer to tell you there is an issue. By using your own senses you can often detect some sort of trouble in the air. If you come across any of these smells that indicate your vehicle is due for auto repair you'll want to visit an auto shop right away. Letting the odor linger will eventually smell of disaster, rather than only an indication of trouble ahead.
Maple Syrup Smell
If you get a whiff of this sweet smell there is a good chance your vehicle has a coolant leak. Because coolant smells so sweet it is very attractive to animals, but be warned it is also very poisonous. Of course, the initial concern will likely be the health of your car. A coolant leak could cause major engine damage due to overheating.
Dirty Gym Bag Smell
If it smells like you left your laundry hamper in your vehicle there is a good chance there is mildew or mold in your air conditioner or heater. This can often be fixed by blasting your heaters with the windows down for 15 minutes or so in order to let them dry out.
If you can smell gas inside your vehicle, especially when when parked inside you may have a dangerous gas leak. The leak may be in either liquid or vapor form. Most likely the leak is coming from a loose or cracked gas cap allowing gas to evaporate from the tank, however it may be due to a faulty injector.
Campfire Smoke Odor
Learning to drive a manual transmission often led to riding the clutch for many young drivers. If that same smell becomes apparent after you've become a veteran of three pedals there is good reason to believe it's time for clutch repair as the plate may have become very thin.
Burnt Oil Smell
If an oil leak drips onto a hot exhaust manifold or other heated part you'll be able to catch the smell of the oil burning. To many people burning motor oil is similar to that of cooking oil. Be on the lookout for blue smoke appearing from under your vehicle if there is in fact a leak that is burning up oil outside your motor.
Smells are a great indication of trouble and they need to be taken seriously. If you catch a whiff of something that isn't familiar you could need some sort of service.
