4 Common Reasons the Check Engine Light Comes On
There are many, many reasons that the check engine light may come on in you car, truck or SUV. A malfunctioning sensor, low tire pressure, low transmission fluid and so much more will cause the light to come on. But some reasons the check engine light comes on are much more common. When the light glows it doesn't always foreshadow an expensive repair, sometimes the issue can be fixed with just the turn of a wrist. Here are 4 common reasons the check engine light is on, and for proper diagnosis be sure to visit your local auto mechanic.
Broken or Loose Gas Cap
A loose or faulty gas cap will allow gasoline to evaporate out of the filler hose, causing the check engine light to come on. To avoid having a potentially expensive diagnostic test to find the reason the light is illuminated is because you forgot to tighten the gas cap, make sure it is snug every time you fill up.
Faulty Mass Air Flow Sensor
Your vehicle runs on a mixture of gasoline and oxygen and the mass air flow sensor monitors and regulates the air coming into the engine to make sure the mix is correct. If the sensor malfunctions the check engine light will glow. The repair is generally inexpensive but very important to take care of, as a bad MAF sensor can drop your fuel efficiency by 25 percent or more!
Bad Ignition Coil
To get your vehicle started the ignition coil uses electricity from the battery to produce the spark necessary to get the pistons pumping. Over the years the coil will wear down with regular use but its life can be shortened extensively due to operation in extreme temperatures.
The catalytic converter is the part of your exhaust system that converts dangerous exhaust fumes to less harmful emissions. It doesn't often fail and if it does it is generally because something else went haywire first, which likely triggered the check engine light long before the catalytic converter would have. Fixing the catalytic converter can be quite expensive, so be sure to have the check engine light diagnosed as soon as it turns on to avoid more costly repairs.
Don't delay in having the check engine light diagnosed. It will usually first come on because of a small issue that could turn into a major problem.
