Does my car need new tires? Here's how to tell!
There is no perfect formula to tell you how long your car's tires will last. The life of a set of tires depends on a several factors, mainly how often you drive. But it depends on how a vehicle is driven as well. In order to determine if you need new tires for your car or truck it is best to keep these ideas in mind. Remember, healthy tires are key to a safe ride that allows for proper braking and control.
Lincoln's head trick
There is a general trick for most tires manufactured in the US to tell if the tread is too worn out. If you take a penny and place it head first in between the raised section of the tires it should cover some of Lincoln's head. If you can see the top of his head it means that there is less that 2/32th of an inch of tread left, which is very little. Get new tires!
General 5 year rule
For most types of tires you can expect them to last for about five years. It is important to take note of the date of when you last purchased tires so that you can get new ones when the time comes.
10 year max
Rubber wears out even when it is not in use. Even if you don't drive your vehicle very often it is best to replace the tires every 10 years. Even if they look as if they are in good condition or have not worn down to the wear bar, you should replace them to prevent the possibility of a tire blowout.
Check the date of manufacture
To check to see if your tires are 10 years old look for the DOT number printed on the side of your tires.
Extend the life of your tires with proper care
To get the most out of your tires be sure to take proper care of them. Always maintain correct air pressure and be sure have them rotated approximately every 10,000 miles.
Putting off getting new tires puts your vehicle at risk of decreased performance and increases the chances of getting a flat tire.
