Is there a problem with my car's cooling system?
Your engine operates in an intensely hot environment, but as long as your cooling system is working properly, you'll have the measures in place to regulate the heat. As soon as you notice a sign of trouble with your cooling system, it'll be best to get to the shop to have the matter inspected. By acting quickly, you can potentially prevent overheating from causing major engine trouble. At The Car Doctor, our local mechanics are experts at diagnosing and repairing cooling system problems.
Indications of a Cooling System Problem
If smoke has begun billowing out from beneath your hood, then you'll want to find a safe place to park your car as quickly as possible. At that point, you may need to add coolant/water. For your safety, you'll want to wait until your engine cools before removing the cap. If you open the cap right away, coolant might spray out and seriously burn you. A high reading on the temp gauge is also one of the more obvious signs of cooling system trouble. If your temperature gauge climbs into the red, you can pull over and call up the shop and describe the situation. Then you can get guidance on whether it seems safe to continue driving your vehicle.
In many cases cooling system leaks are to blame for overheating. It's a good idea to occasionally take a look at the ground where your car is often parked and see if there is any evidence of externally leaking automotive fluids. Coolant can be identified by its bright color. Oftentimes, coolant is green, but yours might be a different color, such as pink, yellow, or orange.
If coolant is leaking internally, then you may see white exhaust smoke. With this symptom, you could be dealing with a blown head gasket.
