Bad Vibes: 3 Shakey Signs Your Car Needs Auto Repair
Modern vehicles are equipped with very intelligent computer systems that keep drivers informed about safety issues and mechanical problems. A car's warning system generally involves illuminating dashboard indicator lights such as the check engine light, ABS light or others. However, cars have other ways of letting drivers know about issues as well, such as loud noises, funny smells and odd vibrations. Shaking sensations you endure while behind the wheel can mean many things, but depending on when and where they're felt, you can often determine what the problem is. Here are three common vibrations symptoms that mean its time to head to the auto repair shop.
Vibrating Steering Wheel
A vibrating steering wheel usually indicates one of two different problems. The first, which is more common, is wheel alignment trouble. If your car is out of alignment it means that at least one tire is pointing in a direction different from the rest, which pulls your steering wheel back and forth as it tries to go in two separate directions. Alignment issues can also cause increased tire wear and cause a reduction in your fuel efficiency. The second problem a vibrating steering wheel means is an issue with the power steering pump. You may be low on fluid or have a worn drive belt.
Brake Pedal Vibration
If you feel a vibration in the brake pedal when you hit the brakes you can bet on warped drums or rotors. Drums and rotors, depending on the type of system that you have, are what the brake pads rub against to create the friction to slow your car. If they become warped or wear oddly it will reduce the surface area the pads can grab, resulting in decreased braking power. The parts may be able to be machined, but there is a good chance that they will need to be replaced to restore your braking ability. If you suspect brake trouble don't delay heading to the shop.
Does your gas pedal shake when you push on it? Or does your whole car rattle as you accelerate? This is a strong indication of an exhaust leak. The escaping fumes create a lot of pressure surrounding the hole they're leaking from because of the high velocity at which the fumes travel through the exhaust system. Not only are exhaust leaks bad for your car, they're downright dangerous for your health!
