Signs of Engine Trouble that You Need to Know
When you first encounter a sign of engine trouble, it'll be best to get to the shop for diagnostics. If you ignore the symptom, then it may soon worsen to the point that you have to spend a lot more money on the repairs than you otherwise would have. At The Car Doctor, our local mechanics are experts at identifying and fixing engine problems. Don't hesitate to give us a call if you notice any of the following signs of engine trouble.
The Check Engine Light
When the check engine light comes on, it doesn't automatically mean that your engine is on the verge of catastrophe. But you'll still want to get to the shop ASAP so that computerized diagnostics can pinpoint the issue. The check engine light often gets triggered by issues with catalytic converters, mass airflow sensors, O2 sensors, ignition coils, and spark plugs.
Common Signs that You Need Engine Repair
You'll definitely want to take action if you notice strange noises emerging from your engine. An assortment of issues can cause a knocking sound, including bad rod bearings. You might hear a repetitive tapping sound if your oil level has gotten dangerously low, with the noise arising due to inadequate lubrication. If your oil level gets extremely low, then metal-on-metal contact may cause your engine's moving parts to suffer major damage.
Another indication of engine trouble is that there's a noticeable loss of power. It's not necessarily a red flag when an old car with a ton of miles gradually loses a little power as it ages. But if the power loss is abrupt and pronounced, then you could be dealing with worn-out pistons or another serious issue.
Discolored exhaust smoke also is cause for concern. By paying attention to the color of the smoke, you can get hints about the underlying problem. Blue-tinted smoke is an indication that oil is leaking. Black smoke is a sign that an excessive amount of fuel is being burned. White smoke is a symptom of an internal coolant leak, and could mean you have a blown head gasket.
