Top Signs of Big Trouble Under the Hood
Nobody ever wants to hear, "Your car needs engine repair," but it definitely happens. While there are many things that can go wrong under the hood, most are pretty minor, unless they go unrepaired. If you ever encounter any of the following signs of engine issues be sure to make an appointment with your local auto shop for further diagnostics. Remember, the longer you wait, the more expensive the problem will become.
Engine knocking noise
One of the most common signs of big trouble under the hood is a knocking sound that rises and falls with engine RPMs. This noise is attributed to worn out engine bearings. These bearings, which support the movements of the interior engine pieces, may wear thin and could eventually seize up, especially without proper lubrication.
Increased exhaust smoke
Excessive amounts of exhaust smoke are likely due to engine trouble. You can generally tell what the problem is based on the color of the fumes. Blue exhaust is a sign oil is being burned, white exhaust means coolant is leaking inside the motor, which can result in overheating, and black exhaust means your vehicle is burning too much gas.
Metal flakes in oil
If the techs who are changing your oil find metal flakes in the old oil it means there is excessive friction occurring between the moving parts. Too much friction can result in a variety of problems, including the need for a a complete engine rebuild or replacement, if the issue isn't addressed quickly.
Check engine light
Perhaps a most obvious sign of trouble, the check engine light can be triggered by numerous issues. Most are relatively small, such as a worn sensor, but if not addressed, the problem will grow much larger. To prevent that be sure to get to the auto shop as soon as possible. Neglecting your car of proper engine care will result in massive problems.
