Help! My Car Won't Start
One of the most frustrating things about owning a vehicle is when it suddenly decides it doesn't want to start. A gas powered car needs three basic things in order to fire up, gas, air and spark. If one or more of those things are not being provided the vehicle will remain at rest. Depending on the symptoms of the no-start issue, you should be able to tell fairly quickly what might be wrong. Here 5 common causes of a car not starting.
The fuel system takes gas from the gas tank and pumps it up to the engine where it is mixed with air and ignited. If the fuel pump fails or the fuel filter becomes clogged gasoline won't be able to make it to the engine and the car won't be able to start.
The ignition switch is what creates the path for electricity to generate the spark needed to create the air and fuel mixture. If the switch fails there will be no detonation, resulting in a cranking engine that won't fire. Other symptoms include the key not turning in the ignition and flickering dash lights.
If your vehicle's starter has gone bad you will hear a single click, or a series of clicks, when you turn the key in the ignition. That is the sound of the starter motor actuating, but not spinning.
The alternator is what charges the vehicle's battery as the car is driven. If the alternator goes bad the battery's power will quickly be drained and the car will not be able to start. You may notice a slow cranking engine, or a completely dead car.
A dead battery is one of the most common causes of no starts. Batteries can die if accessories or lights are left on for extended periods, but they can be jump started and recharged if this is the case. They can also die because of age and regular use. Check your battery's expiration date if you turn the key and get no response. It may be time for a new one.
