When to Suspect a Suspension Problem
A healthy suspension plays an important role in ensuring smooth and safe driving. When you first notice symptoms of suspension trouble, you'll want to bring your vehicle to the mechanic for an inspection. Here's a look at six signs that you need suspension repair.
"Nose Diving" Sensation
If your shocks are shot, then it may feel like you're lunging forward at a downward trajectory when you hit your brake pedal.
Worn-out shocks/struts can cause tires to wear down in an uneven fashion. This can then lead to the formation of bald spots.
Doesn't Pass the Bounce Test
You can conduct a simple test to help figure out if your shocks/struts are shot. To start, make completely sure that your vehicle is securely parked. Then, get out and use all of your weight to push down on the front end. Rock it a couple of times and release. Next, head to the back of the vehicle and repeat the process on the rear. Upon letting go, if the vehicle rocks more than two or three times, then it'll be worth having a mechanic inspect your suspension.
In the event you can clearly see that the pavement is smooth, but it feels like you're driving over bumps, then your suspension could be failing.
As long as you're driving within the posted speed limit, it shouldn't feel like you're drifting when you go around sharp corners. But if you do get this sensation, then it may be time for suspension repair.
There's a good chance that you'll need to replace your shocks if you can see that oil is leaking out onto them.
If you need auto repair, be sure to bring your vehicle to a reputable mechanic.
