Why does my vehicle need oil changes every 3,000 miles?
Modern automobiles require many maintenance services to remain in great driving condition. From belt and hose replacements to fluid flushes, maintenance needs to be completed to keep you moving safely. Most services only need to be done once every couple years, at most, but there is one service vehicles require much more often. Oil changes are a significant service that all cars, trucks, vans and SUVs need on regular basis, usually every 3,000 and 5,000 miles, to keep the engines performing their very best. Here's how fresh oil does that!
Reduce engine temperatures
Engine oil is engineered to reduce the heat produced by the friction of the moving parts of the engine. In essence it assists the cooling system by minimizing heat in areas coolant can't reach. As oil ages it breaks down and loses its ability to perform this function and it can actually end up generating more heat, which can result in overheating issues under the hood. When fresh oil is added to the engine during an oil change, that potential problem will be drained away with the old oil.
Oil circulates through the engine to provide much needed lube to all the motor's moving parts, but it also has another job. The flowing oil picks up contaminants that make their way into the engine, including dirt, metal shavings and whatever else there may be, leaving them at the oil filter as it flows through it. After some time the oil becomes thick with impurities, preventing the engine from being lubricated as it should be, which causes it to work harder to produce power. This can cause a drop in fuel efficiency and puts the engine at risk of additional problems. During an oil change the filter is will be changed and the old oil is drained and new oil added to the motor, allowing it to operate smoothly once again.
Preventative Maintenance Check
At most auto maintenance shops you will receive a service check when you come in for an oil change. This means that a technicians will take time under the hood and around the vehicle to identify potential problems and warn you about them before they leave you stranded on the side of the road.
If your vehicle is due for an oil change be sure to get it done on time. Putting off oil changes only puts your car or truck at risk of expensive engine damage.
